I am always recommending software to users. It occurred to me that I should provide an easy one page list of stuff I recommend. Here are the things I find very useful in my day-to-day work. All listed are for Macintosh. If I know for sure that a PC version exists, it will state so. If there is no link with the description, go to one of the big shareware sites and search for it there.

Publishing Tools

  • Alphabytes Homepage (Rob Lueschke)
Rob offers some of his custom fonts on his web site.

  • Digital Design Buddy
A great little reference tool. A standalone application that has decimal equivalents, screen font to PostScript font information and much more.

  • theTypeBook and MatchThis!
Need to print out a sample of what the font characters look like in a specific font? Or which symbolic pi characters occupy which keystroke? theTypeBook! Use this great utility from Font Guru, Jim Lewis. Jim has many other font utilities on his web site. Check out the MatchThis! database for matching a typeface! How many times have you had a client tell you to match a particular font, but you are having a tough time? Use this database to help you out!

  • Pasteboard XTerminator QuarkXTension
Are you getting errors when you open a QuarkXPress file that tell you that you need the "Pasteboard" XTension? You need this handy XTension that eliminates that error. If you find an old file that was edited in a system that had the old version of the Pasteboard XTension installed, it thereafter requires that that XTension be intsalled in order to open it. I know it's dumb. It was an error in programming from the original author of that XTension (not Quark). This XTerminator corrects that error. You may want to get this anyway for in the future, should you ever come across the error and wonder, "Now, what was I supposed to do when this happens?" Visit the Quark site (www.quark.com) for a probable link to this or one of the big shareware sites listed below.

  • WordCounter XT QuarkXTension
Ever need to count words or characters in your QuarkXPress copy? Use this handy little XTension to show you how many of whatever there are. As a writer who sometimes uses QuarkXPress for writing, it sure comes in handy. From the folks at MarxWare. Visit the Quark site (www.quark.com) for a probable link to this or one of the big shareware sites listed below.

Web Development Tools

  • BBEdit
Want to use the best text editor to create HTML? Use BBEdit. Great HTML tools are a part of BBEdit. It comes in a shareware version as well as a commercial professional version for purchase.

  • GifBuilder
Need to create an animated GIF for your web page? Use this handy shareware. Visit one of the big shareware sites listed below for a probable link to this.

  • GIFConverter
Need to convert a GIF to/from your web page? Use this handy shareware. Visit one of the big shareware sites listed below for a probable link to this.

  • GraphicConverter
Need to convert one image format to another? Use this handy shareware. Visit one of the big shareware sites listed below for a probable link to this.

Macintosh System or Utility Tools

  • StuffIt Expander
Compression standard for the Mac. This is the freeware decompressor. Link it to your browser for auto decompression upon download. Visit one of the big shareware sites listed below for a probable link to this.

  • TechTool
Need to Zap your PRAM? Or rebuild your desktop or check one of many other system flukes on your Mac? Use this great utility to do it easily and painlessly. Besides, who remembers those "secret" keystrokes anyway. Use this to make life easier! Visit one of the big shareware sites listed below for a probable link to this.

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
If you don't have an Acrobat PDF file reader set up, you should. The reader is free. Allows you to see and print PDF files. PDF is a file format that can retain the page layout and the basic font structure of the original but the recipient doesn't need PageLayout Software Barnd X or XYZ font. The reader alone enables you to see that page pretty much as it was intended to be seen. PDF also goes cross-platform Mac to PC and other computer types. No matter what system you use, with a reader, you can see the page.

  • Microsoft Word 6.0 Converter or Word 97-98 Converter
Microsoft Word 5.x users can now open and edit 6.0 files. With the Word 97/98 converter, Word 5.1 users can open and edit Word 97 or 98 files. Visit one of the big shareware sites listed below for a probable link to this.

  • MacInTouch Home Page
The end all/be all for Mac heads. Every tech info tidbit you need to keep your Mac sane and well.

  • Apple Computer Info
    The home team.

  • All of these are pages dedicated to helping you keep your Mac running efficiently. Pages to help you understand what you can "prune" from your Mac and keep it running well, a page to advise you about system conflicts, pointers to other Mac pages, Mac gossip from Mac the Knife...

Communications/Online Tools

  • Eudora
If you don't use Eudora for email, you should. Just get it! A lite version is available as freeware. The "pro" (commercial) version, with manual, is available for purchase—it's only $39 from any retailer. Don't use your browser to do email. Browsers are good for web browsing, not email. Available for Mac or PC.

  • Netscape The best web browser.

  • Fetch for the Mac
The best FTP utility. Easy to use. Shareware. Use it to upload your web files to your web site. Visit one of the big shareware sites listed below for a probable link to this.
