I'm always scouting out good reference to educate clients so they won't need me so much. I recommend the following books in every Mac user's library:

Some of the books listed on this page may already be into 2nd or 3rd editions or may be out of print since they were originally listed.

Macintosh Books (general information)

  • The Mac Almanac
By Sharon Zardetto Aker, from Ziff-Davis Press
(Ziff-Davis Press is part of the Ziff family.)
She was a co-author on the Mac Bible books. This is full of great tips and very handy 'cheat sheet' charts! I like this one much better than the Mac Bibles.

  • Macintosh Secrets
By Pogue & Schorr, from IDG Books
An excellent book of tips, tricks & techniques, entertaining, more advanced info than The Mac Bible. The book cost is paid back just by getting the commercial version of DiskTop--a must for every Mac user (and the other shareware and commercial software alone!).

  • The Little Mac Book
By Robin Williams, from Peachpit Press
A must have book for every Mac Owner and User.Everything you need to know about setting up and installing your Mac, plus "what is this thing thing in my System folder for?" questions are answered in this book. 180pp $14.95

  • The Mac is not a typewriter
By Robin Williams, from Peachpit Press
You want your print published documents to look professional, this is your source of excellent information. Why no double spaces after periods, no double hyphens, use curly quotes instead of inch and foot marks, etc. This book explains how and why with examples. Don't let old typewriter habits show you up as unprofessional! 72pp $9.95 There is also a PC version (and now a sequel: Beyond The Mac is Not a Typewriter!).

Mac Troubleshooting Books

  • Sad Macs, Bombs & Disasters
By Ted Landau, from Addison Wesley

  • The Dead Mac Scrolls
    From Peachpit Press
    and
  • Macintosh Repair & Upgrade Secrets
    From Brady Publishing
Get the version of the book for your Mac Model(s). Both of these are by noted Mac repair guru, Larry Pina. Excellent resources.

  • Desparately Seeking Solutions: A Troubleshooting Guide to the Mac
By Erica Kerwien, from Hayden Books
Macmillan/Hayden Page (Hayden Books is one of the Macmillan Imprints.)
We think this book has an excellent feature... a Troubleshooting Map! It is an older book (copyright1993) but the map alone is worth it! The foldout map lays out the analytical thought process when troubleshooting. So many users don't know where to start, this shows you the logical path through the troubleshooting process. Worth the cost of the book for this basic info in an easy to understand map!

    But...
Peachpit also sells the Mac Bible's What Do I Do Now? book . It is a very basic surface level of what some of the basic error dialog boxes mean. We were unimpressed when we looked at it. We remember looking through it in the first edition where an error was something about the printer not being available in the Chooser. The solution was: It's not on, turn it on. No other solution was offered, nothing about network being down, cables being loose or bad, etc. It tended to promote a false sense of troubleshooting. Pretty lame in our book!

DTP Books

  • Electronic Design and Publishing: Business Practices (2nd Edition)
By Liane Sebastian, from Allworth Press
Who owns the digital files--The creator or the client? Rights and responsibilities for all involved. Many designers or users of DTP technology are confused by this new territory. In the "good oldn days" it was easy, whoever had the artboards owned the boards. I have had many users call me with, "We had this guy create and output files for us for the last couple of years. Now we have our own Macs and want our files, but he won't give them to us!" Are you selling/buying files that can be re-used and edited later OR are you selling/buying output? Get this legal issue solved up front in the contract! Liane's book can help you realize the issues here.

  • Quark Design
By Nancy McCarthy, from Peachpit Press
A visual step-by-step design guide for various page layout projects using QuarkXPress.

  • Photoshop WOW!
By Linnea Dayton and Jack Davis, from Peachpit Press
A visual step-by-step design guide for various Photoshop imaging projects.

  • The Professional Studio Techniques series

    Imaging Essentials
    Design Essentials
    Production Essentials
From Adobe Press. Macmillan/Hayden/Adobe Page (Adobe Press is an Imprint of Hayden/Macmillan Press.)
Assorted design and production tips and techniques using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Designed and written by designers for designers.

  • Adobe's Classroom-In-A-Book training workbook series)

    Adobe Illustrator for Macintosh
    Adobe Illustrator for Windows
    Adobe Photoshop for Macintosh
    Adobe Photoshop for Windows
    Adobe Premiere for Macintosh
    Advanced Adobe Photoshop for Macintosh
    Advanced Adobe Photoshop for Windows
From Adobe Press. Macmillan/Hayden/Adobe Page (Adobe Press is an Imprint of Hayden/Macmillan Press.)
Need to learn Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or Premier? Get the appropriate book in this series. It is the exact same material you would get from an "authorized" Adobe trainer who uses the Adobe Classroom-In-A-Box training sets. These hands-on workbooks come with a CD-ROM that includes lesson files for self-paced tutorials.
